Is your website mobile friendly? Why it is so important that your website should be mobile friendly? What is the myth about Google’s mobile friendly algorithm? As an end user, startup, business owner SMEs or an enterprise, it is pretty important to understand the importance of the responsiveness of your website or portal in the digital world.

As on April 21, 2015, Google announced their mobile friendly algorithm. A significant new mobile-friendly ranking algorithm is designed to give a boost to mobile-friendly pages in Google’s mobile search results. In simple words, the new update prioritizes mobile-friendly websites and pushes mobile-unfriendly sites down the search rankings on mobile. According to Google, “Now searchers can more easily find high-quality and relevant results where text is readable without tapping or zooming, tap targets are spaced appropriately, and the page avoids unplayable content or horizontal scrolling”. The companies who do not possess a mobile-friendly website is most likely to decrease in rankings on mobile and thus, less traffic to their website. Mobile Friendly Algorithm is also known as ‘Mobilegeddon’.

According to Google, 94% of people with smartphones search for local information in their phones in the USA. Interestingly, 77% of mobile searches occur at home or at workplaces where desktop computers are likely to be present. Now, consider where you want to remain when people search from their mobile phone?

This update will affect only search rankings on mobile devices of all languages and will apply to individual pages, not entire websites. To verify if the site is mobile-friendly or not. Use “Mobile-Friendly Test” provided by Google to to ensure that your website is mobile friendly, where by typing web address you can find if it meets the new standard or not, you can also check status of an entire site through the Mobile Usability report in Webmaster Tools. If site’s pages are not mobile-friendly, there may be a notable decrease in mobile traffic from Google Search. But, once site becomes mobile-friendly, will automatically re-process (i.e., crawl and index) the pages. Can speed up the reindexing process with using Fetch function and Submit to Index, where Google will get notification that your URL is ready to be re-crawled, and based on that it will again decide whether your page fit for mobile or not.

Once identified that website isn’t mobile-friendly, can choose one of three configurations – responsive web design, dynamic serving, separate URLs — to turn things around.
