  1. Rate Limiting for Security and Stability

Rate limiting controls the number of requests a client can send to a server within a specific time frame. 

For example, a login API might allow only 10 requests per minute per IP address. If the limit is exceeded, the server returns an error response. This helps prevent: 

  • Brute force attacks 
  • API abuse 
  • Distributed Denial of Service attacks 
  • Unnecessary server overload 

Types of Rate Limiting 

  • User-based rate limiting 
  • Geographic rate limiting 
  • Server-based or global rate limiting 

Implementing rate limiting improves both application security and system reliability. 

 

  1. Lazy Loading vs Eager Loading

The choice between lazy loading and eager loading depends entirely on your application’s use case and performance requirements. 

Eager Loading 

All required entities and related data are fetched immediately.
Best suited when complete datasets are needed upfront. 

Lazy Loading 

Only top-level entities are loaded initially. Additional data is fetched when requested by the user.
This reduces server load and improves performance in large datasets. 

Choosing the right loading strategy directly impacts response time, bandwidth usage, and scalability. 

 

  1. Authentication and Authorization

Protecting user data is a fundamental responsibility of developers. Authentication and authorization ensure secure access control. 

Authentication 

Authentication verifies who the user is. 

Authorization 

Authorization determines what the authenticated user is allowed to access. 

Common Authentication Methods 

  • HTTP Basic Authentication 
  • API Keys 
  • OAuth 

OAuth is widely used for secure delegated access, especially in APIs and third-party integrations. 

Selecting the appropriate authentication method depends on your application architecture and security requirements.

Data transmitted over open networks must be encrypted. Storing sensitive information in plain text exposes users to risks such as:

When to Update Versions 

  • Major changes that break compatibility

Versioning Methods 

  • URI versioning such as /api/v1 
  • Header-based versioning

Modern applications often require real-time updates, such as chat systems, live dashboards, and notifications. 

Polling 

The client repeatedly sends requests to check for new data.
This increases bandwidth consumption and server load. 

Long Polling 

The client sends a request and keeps it open until the server responds.
More efficient than polling but still resource-intensive. 

WebSockets 

WebSocket provides bi-directional communication over a single persistent connection. 

It uses ws or wss protocols. After the initial handshake, communication requires fewer headers, reducing overhead and improving performance. WebSockets are ideal for chat applications, gaming platforms, and real-time analytics systems. 

 

  1. Protocol Buffers vs JSON

Protocol Buffers, developed by Google, is a language-neutral and platform-neutral mechanism for serializing structured data. 

It is often compared to JSON but offers several advantages. 

Advantages of Protocol Buffers 

  • Smaller message size 
  • Faster serialization and deserialization 
  • Support for multiple programming languages 
  • Strong schema definition 
  • Built-in RPC support 
  • Automatic message validation 

Protocol Buffers are widely used in high-performance systems and remote procedure calls.
